Patch 927891 support article "official"…

As per this blogpost

Microsoft finally made the article live.    Susan gives you the American way to get the patches….   here in Europe you call the local Microsoft support number and give the article number to request the patch.

You do NOT need to give them credit card information for a hotfix (as some people seem to think).

The more people that request the patch, the more prioritised the patch will become.

Shame it didn’t do anything to help. Only started getting this issue on the 1st of Feb, called up just as this patch came out and hasn’t helped at all.

Back to the grindstone to figure it out I guess. The best thing is I support 10-ish companies, one of them got hit hard and another had 2-3 people … there’s a few more companies at that site unaffected.

Even with MS having a once a month patch cycle, every minute I have automatic updates turned off for these machines I cringe. My muscles are getting quite fatigued.

    Hey “Thingy”.

Running Windows Defender? If so, remove it and report back… I am interested in the result.

    Thanks,

    Nick

Not running windows defender. After a bit of playing around in VM sessions it finally came down to an issue with the WSUS server. Point affected machines elsewhere (even to WSUS servers at other sites) and they work, yet some machines have no issues no matter which server we point them to.

Doesn’t matter, gives me an excuse to rebuild this WSUS server so it will finally point at the parent as opposed to being stand alone.

Hey, found this blog from ars technica, thought I would share a workaround I found here also. I just configured auto updates service to run in a svchost.exe all by itself and ran a scan after lowering the priority of the svchost process that ran the auto updates service. It still eats the CPU but other programs aren’t cut off from getting the CPU they need, so the system doesn’t feel as hosed. A couple of ways to do it at http://mygreenpaste.blogspot.com/2007/02/more-on-isolating-shared-services-in.html (the one I used) and http://mygreenpaste.blogspot.com/2007/01/troubleshooting-performance-issues-with.html.

    Hey Nick,

I came to the conclusion that it was Windows Defender causing the problem.

Removing it seems to have fixed things – fingers crossed!

I would like to push this patch out to all of the computers in my domain, but WSUS won’t pick up the patch. Any idea when we can expect to see it? I’d rather not have to install it on 500 computers individually.

Patch did not fix the problem here either.
Uninstalling Windows Defender appears to have not fixed the problem here.
Workaround here is turn off Microsoft Update. Windows Update is ok. Have to manually install Office Updates.
Terrible for 200+ computers scattered all over town.
    Terrible.
Posts above are from February and MS still has not fixed.
    Terrible.

We have 200+ machines here as well and the patches havent helped at all. In the bottom of KB927891 it says if it fails to solve the issue call MS Support.

But they then want the Credit Card details to proceed any further even though we have paid for SA through a Select Agreement (after 40 mintues on the phome with them looking for the Agreement)….

Really getting frustrated and annoyed as they caused the problem but wont roll back or provide a fully working fix. Tired of being Testers for Mcirosoft…..

    Anthony,

You DO NOT have to pay Microsoft for hotfixes. Whomever you are talking to has obviously not understood that this is a known bug and you are calling for a updated hotfix.

Tell them you are looking for the WSUS 3.0 client that fixes the issue.

Also, keep an eye on the WSUS site today 🙂

Microsoft now acknowledges that patch 927891 does not solve all problems. They are “investigating the issues, but haven’t posted an update (or the patch to finish fixing things) since the beginning of February.
