Vista SP1 RTM has destroyed my inner child

Yes, you heard that right.   For the last 72 hours I have been trying to figure out why my Creative Labs X-Fi card was crackling on my Dell XPS 720H2C.

The Dell technical support tried everything with me!   Removed drivers, reinstalled drivers, checked for conflicts with the nForce Motherboard (fixed last year by nVidia and Creative).  You name it, we did it.    I completely forgot that I had installed Vista SP1 RTM.

Well, thanks to Windows Home Server, I have rolled back my installation to pre SP1 status and all is well again.   In fact, I have to say, the machine is quicker without SP1 anyway – how is that even possible?!   That includes file copying by the way!

I am so close to upgrading to XP once and for all.

I have a Dell XPS 600 EE, and a Creative SB X-Fi, and all seems well on SP1 RTM. The driver I’m using, is from Creative, dated 9/20/2007, with a version of 6.0.1.1303.

Side Note: This system, which came with XP loaded, was never stable until I moved to Vista, It’s been awhile since I booted to XP, and I’m thinking of totally removing XP!

    Hi Rick,

I think it is something to do with the nForce board in the 720H2C. Apparently this was a problem before with the driver in 2005 / 2006.

Dell have escalated to the third level tech’s and design team, I am sure that they will come up with a solution. When and if they do, I will post it up here.

    Cheers,

    Nick

The quicker will build back up in a day or so, it’s the prefetch folder that was erased and will rebuild.

    LOL
Last week was my first serious play with Vista.

Transferring a copy of a friend’s old hard-disk to his new Vista machine’s folder.
    (Physically relocated into Vista PC).

    Nightmare.

Approx a 10 minute task under XP,
registering as 17 days 3 hrs under Vista.

    No AV running.

Had just had audio crackling for the first time with FSX, (XP)
