kservice.exe – what is it and why can I not easily remove it?

I was just doing a checkup on my machine and I noticed a program had “Hung on starting” in the event viewer.   Kservice.

What the hell is that I thought…     well, without the boring details that is the file sharing (P2P) part of Sky by Broadband, sitting there even though I uninstalled it ages ago.   Agh!  WHY do companies do that…   when you remove a program, it should remove everything and not leave a file sharing application sitting on my PC thanks!

I have since found a couple of other comments on the subject:

Try using “Rootkit Revealer”. It is great for getting rid of residue left behind dirty applications. You would be suprised what one application could leave behind.

Since found out that this service can open up your PC to use by anybody outside your local network.

Dodgy and dangerous software. recommend that you diable the service if you are unable to remove it

As an aside, a friend of mine just had trouble with this since 4OD (4’s new on demand service) also uses it.

…..and the new BBC iPlayer service now uses KService.exe too. I have Sky, 4OD and BBC iPlayer on the PC – and now the PC won’t start any of them after installing the new BBC player – something got scrambled

AOL Hi-Q Video Delivery Manager also uses KService.

Just as a sideline. KService.exe opens on Port 80 which will crash you IIS service if it starts first.
