IE7 broke my Flight Simulator….

This one caused me a little grief…

I reinstalled my PC over the weekend and that included an install of Internet Explorer Beta 2 Preview as I love the new features it gives us.   I then installed Flight Simulator 9 and the 9.1 patch.   To my horror the game started to load and then crashed out to the desktop.   I did not initially think of the IE7 install as FS9 had been working before with that installed.   Of course the difference was that FS9 was installed before IE7 in that case.

I got some strange errors in the event logs that had no real meaning (EventID 0), and on another test machine I got this error:

Faulting application fs9.exe, version 9.1.0.40901, faulting module mfc70.dll, version 7.0.9466.0, fault address 0x0004a536.

I searched support.microsoft.com and could find nothing…  then I searched the blogroll.   Of course, the answer came up on Mike’s busy blog!  Delete the OLEACC.DLL file from the root of the Flight Simulator directory and you are good to go.

(Oh Sean….    this is another one of those times I could really do with FS being on the Infopath forms for support.microsoft.com.   I’d have a tech article up within minutes.)

    Ah, thank goodness, a fix!

This *really* should be in the readme for IE7, or posted on the FS2004 official page. I just did a complete re-install to fix this problem, which re-occured almost imediately (though this time I noticed the relationship between IE7 and FS2004).

I checked almost every forum I knew and never saw any stickies or references to IE7 vs FS2004, and one of the main places I looked was the FS2004 homepage.

Anyway, at least there is a fix, because I actually quite liked IE7 as well!

    Hi Adrian,

Fair comment. I will pass this onto the team at Microsoft.

Would you have searched support.microsoft.com as well as part of your troubleshooting process? If so, then very soon I will be able to post articles there just like I can with SBS.

    Nick.

    Nick,

When you install the new IE do you loose all your favorites?

    Thanks.

    Hey Jeff…

From memory no, the favorites were ok. (However, I would suggest going into your c:documents and settingsyournamehere folder and backing them up beforehand)

Thanks Nick for the heads up.
I also had an IE7 related problem with Paint Shop Pro X.
I had purchased a new hard drive and decided to re-install everything afresh. XP-Pro FS9 Office (Yada yada yada…)
When trying to re-activate my software the system would not allow me to enter my purchase key, there was no enter purchase key button.
After several conversations with Corel who sounded as though they did not believe me … we eventually found that the new IE 7 had issues with Active X controls.
In order to re-active the software I had to uninstall IE 7 and re-install IE 6. Having activated the software I was able to get IE 7 back up and running.

This only worked with regards to the navigation information. I still get a CTD when I try to access the Kneeboard.

  14. July 5, 2006 at 3:59 am

Odd, I just checked here and mine is working without issue.

    Have you modded the kneeboard?

    Fantastic!
I applied the fix, and it works.
Microsoft screwed it up again; yet you fixed it. Thank you!

After installing IE7 I can not open Mcafee to scan my computer. I have tried the recommended fixes and no results. Any idea?
    Thanks,
    George

    Hi Nick

Got this huge problem of FS9 suddenly terminating itself and disappearing. I’m running Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2180 @ 2.00Ghz, 2GB RAM. On board graphics card. FS on “medium low” for all.

FS has 9.1 patch. Running FSPassengers. Running Activesky 6.5. Running VOZ (Vista Australia textures)

Most frustrating when you’re running FSPassengers and its a 4.5 hour flight, and going in on approach. Your progress on FSPassengers cannot be saved.

Thought it was graphics problems from my reading, but even on medium low it still terminated itself…

    Appreciate your input.
